Movie review: (horror/suspense) “While She Was Out” (2008)

December 13, 2010 at 9:33 pm (horror, movies, suspense)

Yeah, I don’t usually go for the “woman chased around by bad guys” movies. But this one was produced by Guillermo del Toro, and based on a short story by Ed Bryant. Besides, I like Kim Basinger.

So it starts out pretty standardly. Kim has a dickweed abusive husband. She’s under a lot of stress. She goes out to the crowded mall to buy Christmas wrap, where she irritates a pleasingly racially integrated gang of thugs. Head thug Lukas Haas accidentally shoots a rent-a-cop right in front of Kim, and the chase is on.

Kim crashes her car, thugs in hot pursuit. She can’t start it again. She jumps out. And what does she grab? Her purse? Her keys? Nope. Her LITTLE RED TOOLBOX! YES MA’AM!

Much mahem ensues. Note to thugs: if a chick is beating in your head with a lug wrench, you might want to fall on the ground and cover your face instead of standing there looking dumb. There is more merriment involving a big screwdriver and a highway flare, too.

Was this a great move? No. Did it make me giggle maniacally? Yep. And what else can you really ask for?

-Rated R
-3 out of 5 stars
-Possibly OK for older teens who enjoy a good toolbox murder.
