Movie review: (horror) Re-Cycle (2006)

December 13, 2010 at 8:17 pm (horror, movies)

This is one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen. Both gorgeous and creepy, this Chinese flick is a feast for the eyes.

A young female writer, behind on a deadline, starts to write a supernatural story. Suddenly she finds herself plunged into a nightmare wonderland of crumbling buildings, decaying carnivals, forests of the dead, and worse. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

Unfortunately, the entire movie was a buildup to a heavy-handed statement on an incindiary social issue. The end of this movie will either touch you deeply, or piss you off so badly you want to throw something through the screen. I’m not going to tell you which way I reacted.

I give this movie 4 stars for the eye-popping visuals–it is a true work of art. But I knock one star off because I don’t like being set up and bludgeoned by a screenwriter on a soapbox.

-Rated R
-4 out of 5 stars
-Not for kids
