Movie review: (horror/suspense) “Seance” (2000)

December 11, 2010 at 10:49 pm (horror, movies, suspense)

Wow. Good movie, but hella depressing. Fascinating, though. The story centers around a quiet, childless couple; Sato, a sound engineer, and his subdued, psychic wife Junko.

Junko can communicate with the dead, and she sometimes takes client…s in need of closure. She also sees ghosts–and she’s scared to death of them. She goes out of her way to avoid them, and they go out of their way to find her. This is a person who really, truly, deeply wishes she was ordinary, but just isn’t.

When the couple is hit by a bizarre twist of fate, they make a series of devastatingly bad decisions. This leads, slowly and painfully, to their utter downfall. There are some extremely creepy moments along the way, but this is more tense thriller than horror. Still, a wonderfully made movie. Just have plenty of chocolate and a cuddly dog, cat, possum or person with you when you watch it, because you will be bummed afterwards.
