Movie review: (horror) “Kill Theory” (2009)

Well, this movie didn’t suck as badly as I thought it would. That said, it was no great piece of cinema either.

The premise kind of made me chuckle. A crazed mountain climber (u hear that Kij Johnson?) was forced to cut his three best friends loose when they fell and were about to drag him down the mountain to his death. (I dunno, seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. What was the dude supposed to do, just die so he didn’t feel left out?)

Anyway. Crazed climber wants to prove that anybody would kill his best friends if he had to, so he goes all Jigsaw on a houseful of snotty college kids. He tells them they have to kill each other. If one person is still alive by 6AM, that person can go free. if more than one person is alive at 6AM, everybody dies. Mmmmmmkay.

So, the sensible thing to do would be to hole up in the basement with weapons and wait for this asshat to show up. Eight against one, right? AND THEY THINK OF THAT! WOW! But hey, SOMEbody’s a sociopath, and ruins the whole thing. People start getting killed left and right.

It gets pretty silly in the middle. The dialog is awful, and some characters make incredibly dumb choices. And why, WHY is the fat guy always the coward? What a bunch of BS! (And incidentally, said chubby kid was THE best actor of the bunch. So there.)

The ending wasn’t bad. I did not successfully predict who would live and who would die, which was kind of nice. And there was a nasty little twist of irony at the end. Overall, not bad. Not memorable, but then again, not the absolute miserable crapola that sometimes comes out of Horrorfest.

-Rated R
-3 out of 5 stars
-Probably OK for older teens who are into horror

  1. Kij said,

I dunno. I always think killing my climbing partners is nonproductive. 🙂
