Movie review: (dark comedy) “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” (2009)

December 11, 2010 at 8:44 pm (dark comedy, horror, movies)

I lucked out and saw this at SIFF. FABULOUS decision to cast two of the most talented and funniest (not to mention cutest) young actors working as the title roles. Tyler Labine (Sock from Reaper) is downright winsome as the shy, gentle, and weirdly brilliant Dale. Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) is perfect as the acerbic, smartmouthed, but not quite cynical Tucker. The young actress who plays psychology student Allie holds her own quite well against these two funny forces of nature.

This movie has everything. It’s a complete inversion of the “killer hillbilly” movie. I don’t want to say much more about the plot, because you need to see it for yourself. But it’s well written, well directed, hilarious, and gleefully gory. And the scary character, when that character is revealed, is actually pretty dang scary. The The action sequences are brilliantly put together, balancing both tension and hilarity.

And the dog! Such a cute dog! Dale has this adorble one-eyed dog that’s half pibble and half mastiff. And flatulent. Very flatulent. Okay, you never see or hear the dog fart onscreen, but I know this because…

…when everybody else was asking the director, cinematographer, and Tyler Labine intelligent film-school questions, I raised my hand and hollered WHAT KINDA DAWG WAS THAT? THAT WAS SUCH A GREAT DAWG! And Tyler went on about him for five minutes!

Sorry. Anyway, he’s really sweet.

This movie is just pure fun. DO NOT MISS IT!

-Not rated
-5 out of 5 stars
-Probably OK for older teens who are into splatter
