Movie review: (crime/thriller) “Backyard” (2009)

December 11, 2010 at 6:08 pm (crime, movies)

This is an incredible film. It’s also some of the most disturbing stuff I’ve ever seen. Not because it’s gory–the gruesome stuff is there, but minimal. It’s disturbing because it’s so well done, and it’s based on the ugly fact that hundreds and hundreds of young women have been brutally murdered in Juarez, Mexico, and the murders continue today.

The cinematography is stunning, and the performances are, wtihout exception, excellent. There are no easy answers here. The conclusions the film comes to are horrifying, and most probably accurate.

I was deeply unsettled and creeped out by “Backyard,” not to mention saddened. I just hope it draws some attention to the ongoing fact that there is an open season on women in Juarez, and there has been for the past 15+ years.
