Movie Review: (drama) “Brothers of the Head” (2006)

December 10, 2010 at 3:50 am (horror, music)

HOLY CRAP. What an incredible movie!  This is just one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time.

If you like punk rock, or mockumentaries, or Brit films, or just good movies in general, watch this one. The two boys who play the conjoined twins are unbelievably good. Fey, strange and feral, they seem out of place in the world of 70’s punk, and yet it’s their very strangeness that makes them so wonderful.

The intense love-hate relationship between the conjoined twins is both fascinating and heartbreaking. A strange undercurrent of eroticism runs through the movie, and through the boys’ relationship. Through no choice of their own, they have to experience intimacy together, and it starts tearing them apart.

I get a little cheesed off when I watch movies that are about music, and there isn’t much music in them. (I’m talking to YOU, “The Runaways.”) This movie is full of original, really good music, performed by the young brothers themselves.

On one level, this is a mockumentary about a weird promoter-created punk act. But this movie has more levels than a freakin’ Mario game. It’s deep, and not in a OMG I’m confused WTF just happened kind of way. It’s deep in subtext, visuals, and layers of reality. I could watch it several more times. In fact I think I will.

Um…not a real happy ending. But I’m sure you could have guessed that.

-Rated R
-5 out of 5 stars
