Movie review: (drama) “The Horseman” (2008)

Okay, this is what I thought I’d started watching when I started the Dennis Quaid movie “The Horsemen.” This is The HorseMAN. And a very different movie.

In one way, it’s a straight-up revenge movie. A man’s daughter dies after participating… in a porn film. Dad goes ballistic and decides to kill everybody involved. However, this Aussie flick is way different than most American revenge movies.

For one thing, the protagonist isn’t heroic. He’s pitiful and broken. And sometimes, you doubt whether his horrible vengeance is proportionate to the crime. (His daughter wasn’t murdered, she died of an accidental overdose.)

Our hero picks up an 18-year-old girl hitcher, who of course reminds him of his daughter, and fires up his protective instincts. This raises the stakes considerably. You have to consider Christian, the protagonist, to be pretty much done. But the sweet young girl has everything ahead of her.

Warning: This movie has lots and lots of super nasty, ultra bloody, extra realistic violence. It is NOT fun to watch, but it makes for an intense movie.

If you’re not squeamish and you want something different, check this one out.

-Rated R
-4 out of 5 stars
-Loads of blood, gore, torture, and mayhem. Mature audiences and strong stomachs only.
